After the success of his first book ‘Now It Begins’, Gary Markwick has ventured into the world of docu/fantasy, chronicling the life and times of his grandfather’s adventures in America, Canada and Europe.

With his new offering, the ‘Adventures of The Great Marlo and The Blue Pearl’ Gary has opened up a ‘Pandora’s Box’ of delights. Journey with ‘The Great Marlo’, Marko the Magician and the many friends and foes they meet along the way, experience the thrills and spills of life on the edge as well as the spiritual enlightenment that comes their way.

This is a book like no other you have read before, part documentary, part fantasy it manages to mix the two in a sympathetic and bold manner that leaves the reader hanging out for more.

WHAT’S THE BOOK ABOUT?

The story unfolds, as seen through the eyes of David – “The Great Marlo”, who left his home in Edinburgh, Scotland at the age of 12 to join a travelling circus where he met Marko a magician who tells him the story of ‘The Blue Pearl’.

Deep below the surface of Buddha’s birthplace in Lumbini lies the sacred Buddha Stone, which holds the secret of the Blue Pearl!

What is the secret that the Blue pearl possesses?

Through his adventures all is uncovered and brought to light

Filled with mysticism and intrigue the great adventure unfolds, covering the period from the late 1800’s to the 1960’s and crossing the continents of India, USA, Canada and Europe. We see truth and enlightenment on a spiritual journey revealed before our eyes.

David Galloway Lindsay later became well known as an escapologist (The British Houdini) a magician, a palmist, and a performer with mind reading skills. Working with his son Roy, and later on his daughter Georgina, he performed with the BBC and theatres around Great Britain, and some parts of the USA, going on to become famous as “The Great Marlo and Georgina”.

HOW DOES THE BOOK START?

It was the year of 1962 around Christmas time, the thick, dense, deadly smog that lay across London like a blanket, had finally lifted and the cold was finding its way in.

The winter to follow was going to be one of the coldest on record for a hundred years, even the river Thames had frozen right across.

I stared hypnotically at the coal fire that had been lit, crackling away with the logs placed on top, which created a warm cosy atmosphere in the small lounge of our central London apartment that we lived in at the time.

Mostly it was my grandmother who brought me up, as the rest of the family were usually away working around the country. At that time my father had been involved with some people who had led him astray and was serving an 18 month sentence in Norwich prison, for driving and supplying the car in a jewellery robbery in the West End of London, Piccadilly.

After completing his prison sentence my father never returned to that style of life, it had taught him a lesson.

Although money was scarce I never wanted for anything. My grandfather, when at home, could apply himself to many skills and was at that time building me a beautiful castle made of wood. It had a drawbridge, turrets, stood around eighteen inches high, and was painted by my grandfather. It was the most delightful Christmas present that any child could wish for.

When my father was in prison, his mother had died and I remember seeing him at the funeral with two men, handcuffed as they had brought him down to London closely guarded, this was an awful time for him.

On Boxing Day the snow came down and continued to fall for a few days making it almost a white Christmas. Whenever my grandfather was at home, we would both sit at the small square wooden table in the tiny lounge and play many different games. He would often use playing cards and certain symbols that were painted white on blackboards to test my psychic abilities, as well as entertain with his magic tricks.

As the days passed and the snow settled, my grandfather would tell me tales of his past, some of which I had heard before. This time as I listened it was in greater detail, or perhaps I didn’t always pay full attention to what he said in the past, as he always reminded me of this by saying, “one day you’ll be sorry for not listening to me”.

The atmosphere that surrounded us was reminiscent of a Dickensian setting. The warmth of the blazing fire and the pine Christmas tree that was brightly decorated. The snow that could be seen laying on the rooftops of the old Victorian houses, with the cobbled streets that once paved the way for horses and carts, was truly magical.

So, this is where it all began, the stories, adventures, mysticism, magic and spiritual experiences of “The Great Marlo”. Some of which I know to be true and others, well I will leave that to your imagination and for you to decide.

MEET SOME OF THE CAST

‘David’

The well-dressed man who stood next to David said “It seems that you may have an interest in magic”. “Yes I do, and someday I want to be a great magician just like him”, pointing up to the poster. The man again laughed and said in a calm voice “You have a high spirit and it seems that you are a determined young man”. “I am”, replied David in his Scottish accent. “Well now”, said the man, “How would you like to see this great magician perform?”

Marko the Magician:

David listened intensively and was amazed at what he was hearing; he said “What happened then”? Marko said “The attempt was successful and I was freed”. Leaving Calcutta I then made my way to Benares which is a magical place of mystery situated on the river Ganges where people are cremated after dying on Earth.

Animishah holy man

Animishah said “Karma knows no love or hate, it just is. When you act, there is always a re-action to everything, if you put your hand in a fire, you will be burned.”

Houdini

“Would you like to come and have a look inside my house?” Houdini said.

“Yes please, I would love to” Duncan replied.

Houdini showed him around, there were many rooms and one of them contained all of his props, the straight jacket, the handcuffs and other items that he used for magic.

Moggallana

The monk told me to relax, he said, “Use what you have been taught by those who were wise, allow your inner eye to open and now let it become single”.

WHERE DOES THE STORY TAKE PLACE?

It was the year of 1962 around Christmas time, the thick, dense, deadly smog that lay across London like a blanket, had finally lifted and the cold was finding its way in.

In August 1899 David Galloway Lindsay, the son of a master baker of Princes Street Edinburgh in Scotland, England, was born.

David became a little despondent, as he had walked miles through the concrete jungle of some of the derelict and most dangerous streets in the large city of Glasgow.

Calcutta was a bustling capital city under British rule of the empire.

Calcutta had always been a city of culture with poets, musicians and other entertainers.

I reached Bombay, a busy city, unlike the water of the Ganges Rivers’’.

I had decided that I would go in search of Ajanta and after many days of travelling and wading through jungle,

I finally came across an opening where the landscape became visible and the scenery was breath taking. The surroundings were adorned with beautiful flowers and trees, a river also ran through where it met with a waterfall, which eventually led to the caves.

Leaving the magical, colourful, spiritual and busy bathing Ghats by the river Ganges of Banaras, Marko made his way towards Lumbini in Nepal (Buddha’s Birthplace).

After leaving Banaras, a few days later I reached the city of Agra where the Taj Mahal is. The Taj Mahal is one of the most famous buildings in the world.

Leaving Pushkar we travelled to Jaisalmer, a town on the edge of the desert, here we found a remarkable fort and a colony of musicians living together.

Udaipur is often called the Venice of the East and the city of the lakes. It also had many beautiful temples and places that were made of white marble, which added to its atmosphere and ambiance.

The boys had stowed away on a passenger ship, which was leaving Glasgow for Quebec, Canada.

After leaving the city of Toronto, David managed to stop en route and visit the spectacular scenery of Niagara Falls with their breath taking views.

Wandering the streets throughout the day with night fall closing in, can be a little dangerous, hostile and lonely in a large city such as New York.
